2016 was another year full of amazing books and favourite titles.  It would take much too long for me to write about each book that I fell in love with this year but here is a quick snapshot of some of favourite titles that were published and/or read in 2016.

Winter 2016/2017 in the BT Library

Fall has flown by and we now find ourselves in the midst on wintry weather.  Here is a sneak peek of what’s happening in the BT Library this Winter:

  • TinLids Book Fair
  • Forest of Reading
  • Battle of the Books
  • Staff Readers of the Month

Last week we had our first ever TinLids Book Fair.  Focusing solely on books and promoting Canadian authors, this Book Fair was different from years previous but was a great hit with staff, student, and families.  This fundraising event for the Library will help purchase new materials in the New Year focusing on diversity, equity, and numeracy.

The annual Forest of Reading program will be starting in January.  The Forest of Reading® is Canada’s largest recreational reading program! This initiative of the Ontario Library Association (OLA) offers reading programs to encourage a love of reading in people of all ages. The Forest® helps celebrate Canadian books, publishers, authors and illustrators. More than 250,000 readers participate annually from their School and/or Public Library.

This year, Bruce Trail is participating in six different programs:

  • Blue Spruce (grades K to 2): picture books will be read in-class and/or during library visits
  • Silver Birch Express (grades 3 & 4): run as an extra-curricular, includes a mix of fiction and non-fiction titles
  • Silver Birch Fiction (grades 5 & 6): run as an extra-curricular, fiction novels
  • Silver Birch Non-Fiction (grades 5 & 6): run as an extra-curricular, non-fiction books
  • Red Maple Fiction (grades 7 & 8): run as an extra-curricular, fiction novels
  • Red Maple Non-Fiction (grades 7 & 8): run as an extra-curricular, non-fiction books

A big thank you goes out to Parent Council who have generously provided funds for the purchasing of all Forest of Reading materials.

Battle of the Books, a trivia style competition prompting students to show their book smarts will start-up in February.  Stay tuned for more details and further information in the New Year.

Our Staff Reader of the Month initiative continues and has been met with great success!  Students loving learning about and connecting with BT staff that share a love of reading.  Be sure to check-out our November and December readers Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Baron, and Mr. R. Skinner:
